The discussion there is not long, but very interesting. In fact, it
is interesting because of what it lacks. What you do see in that
discussion demonstrates one of the maladies of the
(English-language) Wikipedia these days.
Almost all responses address the issue from the bureaucratic point
of view, namely whether the article deletion procedure (the
so-called AfD) was normal and appropriate. One response argues that
there was nothing wrong with the deletion process and claims that
the inclusionists-deletionists struggle has ended long ago. This
response suggests that the problem would be overcome with minor
amendments to the regulations. Another response reads, "Every day,
thousands of absolutely idiotic, non notable articles get, started
that really have no point or hope [...] It would largely be a waste
of time to prod them, mark them 'citation needed', talk to the new
user".
Apparently, the zest of curiosity that is so crucial to anyone who
"patrols" Wikipedia is lost. New articles, even when written poorly
or seem like a joke, should trigger a sense of interest and
curiosity that would lead any devoted Wikipedian to happily embark
on a small research about it.
When I was an admin on the Hebrew Wikipedia, someone once asked me
to check whether an article about "Buchholz relay" was a joke. It
was a short article that seemed to both of us like a hoax of some
high school students who had a teacher called Mr. Buchholz. And yet,
even as a joke it seemed interesting enough, so I looked into the
subject, and found out it was a serious attempt to write about a
serious issue. I am not a Wikipedia admin anymore because I have
enough disadvantages to make this role impossible for me, but I'm
afraid the admins on WP today (and I'm talking mainly about the
English-language one) seem to prefer bureaucracy over knowledge
seeking.
