I had one good experience with the offline version of Wikipedia. I'm
not sure whether it was Kiwix-based or another software. In 2010, I
initiated a cooperation between Wikimedia Israel and the Africa
Center at the Ben Gurion University in Beersheba. The Center sent a
students' mission to Santchou, Camroon with computers on which
offline versions of the French Wikipedia had been installed. It was
a huge success and especially helped the schoolchildren in Santchou.
Unfortunately, I wasn't able to reproduce this success due to all
kinds of technical problems. Apparently the computers are often too
heavy for students who have to travel light, and flash drives are
great, but the students don't always have the necessary technical
knowledge for installing them on the local computers (it's not
rocket science, but it's still too much for them, especially when
they have other things to worry about). Perhaps making the
installation straightforward is the next task, if it hasn't been
taken care of yet.<br>
