Hi Andi
Yeah there seems to be a great deal of cross-over making strict
categorizations difficult if not impossible. For one thing, while
dance (eg trance) festivals are more likely to be motivated by
commercial interests than electronic arts festivals, this is not a
rule. Whats interesting me right now is how festivals are contexts
for the fusion of disparate styles and intentions (of the events i
attended this year, Fusion festival in Germany was probably exemplary
here. For ten years the festival has reclaimed a former soviet air
base with about 12 hangars for various styles of performance. This
year there was about 35,000 people. An incredible festival:

Political circumstances need to be taken into account when making
observations and comparisons. The UK's Glade Festival is another
cross genre dance festival (though more strictly devoted to EDM),
held in the country. Organisers are weighed down with increasingly
arduous permit requirements (including strictly enforced 4am sound
curfews, and over-the-top security) forcing ticket prices upwards .
These contraints are a legacy of repressive regulatory and ordinance
measures ranged against EDMC in that country, while the remarkably
unregulated Fusion reveals a post-unification climate of freedoms
celebrated in the former East Germany.
