Hi everyone,
Just thought I'd introduce myself as I've been a subscriber for a few weeks
now. I'm a PhD student in the music department at the University of Salford
and I'm researching the UK psy-trance scene. I'm interested in how the psy
scene's counter-cultural origins (in Goa etc) have influenced the current
scene, and whether indeed this background continues to be relevant for
today's participants in the culture. In particular I'm asking the question
whether the portrayal of the Goa/psy scene as a overtly
spiritual/ritualistic entity (as seen in Rave Culture and Religion) is
accurate when considering the current UK scene. I'm looking at the music as
well as the culture with the aim of coming to a conclusion as to whether or
not psy-trance is very different to other dance genres (as appears on the
surface). My research methods are primarily participant observation and
unstructured/semi-structured interviews, plus musical analysis.
Anyway, I'd like to hear from anyone who's working in a similar area- there
seems to be a few psy-trance researchers out there by the looks of previous
posts!
Cheers,
Rob Lindop
