In my understanding, edonkey was a commercial P2P file-sharing 
system, after which open-source clients were developed (emule) which 
used the same network. The ed2k system lives despite transition 
troubles (eg drunkendonkey).

And, while bittorent relies on dsl, ed2k is compatible with dialup, 
and thus - as a global communal hard drive, which is also open and 
searchable - more widely accessible.

Appears to be a useful resource for MS O/S users.
