>Abstract: This presentation critically revisits Victor Turner's
>concept of "liminality" in the light of international research on
>psychedelic trance, or psytrance, culture. Electronic dance music
>cultures (EDMCs) (including rave, techno, drum-n-bass, hip hop and
>psytrance) have become popular fields of ecstatic experience
>attractive to growing populations worldwide. Anthropologists and
>other researchers have sought theoretical models assisting
>understanding of these developments in youth and music cultures. A
>cornerstone of ritual analysis and a critical component of Turner's
>processual model of ritual and performance, "liminality" has proven
>especially popular within the emergent field of EDMC studies. Much
>of this research has offered unmodified applications of Turnerian
>theory on "ritual" and "ritual-like" phenomena. Part of an effort to
>devise heuristics appropriate to understanding contemporary youth
>"neo-tribalism", lifestyle and performance, as well as contemporary
>religion, this presentation draws from my ongoing critical
>ethnography to offer some insights on what I call the protracted and
>hyper liminal characteristics of psytrance. That is, attending to
>recent research at psytrance festivals in Israel and Portugal, I
>explore the accelerated and complex nature of liminality in the
>present.
