Een meer dan twee meter grote foto - levensecht! - van de Lijkwade van Turijn gefotografeerd door de Italiaanse fotograaf Guiseppe Enrie in 1931. Een foto van Sigmund Freud poserend in zijn werkkamer met zijn hond Jofi. Of de in 1857 gemaakte foto <i class="">La grande Vaque</i> van de wereldberoemde fotograaf Gustave le Grey. Een afdruk hiervan werd in 1999 gekocht door sjeik Saud Al-Thani uit Qatar voor ruim 840 duizend dollar; destijds het hoogste bedrag ooit betaald voor een foto. De foto op <i class="">Depth of Field</i> is, voor zover bekend, een van de ongeveer zeven bewaard gebleven afdrukken.</div><div class="" style="margin: 0px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; color: rgb(26, 26, 26); background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255); min-height: 12px;"><br class=""></div><div class="" style="margin: 0px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; color: rgb(26, 26, 26); background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);">De tentoonstelling-samenstellers Joris Jansen en Wendela Hubrecht - beide van origine fotograaf - zijn al langer geïnteresseerd in historische fotografie. Voor <i class="">Depth of Field</i> hebben zij geput uit hun eigen collectie en uit die van vele gerenommeerde buitenlandse handelaren. Alle tweehonderd foto’s zijn zeldzaam. Het betreft meestal de enige nog bewaard gebleven afdruk van, voor zover bekend, verloren gegane negatieven. Daarin schuilt de bijzonderheid. Maar Jansen en Hubrecht willen vooral met hun selectie laten zien dat wie goed kijkt meer kan ontdekken. Dat kan door de historische context, door de beeldkwaliteit of door de verhalen die verbonden zijn aan de foto’s.</div><div class="" style="margin: 0px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; color: rgb(26, 26, 26); background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255); min-height: 12px;"><br class=""></div><div class="" style="margin: 0px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; color: rgb(26, 26, 26); background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);">Zo was de ruim twee meter grote afdruk van de lijkwade van Jezus Christus lang in het bezit van een gegoede Franse familie en hing deze bijna negentig jaar in hun bibliotheek. De foto wordt tijdens <i class="">Depth of Field</i> in Amsterdam voor het eerst getoond aan het Nederlandse publiek. En het hondje Jofi op de foto van Freud bleek altijd aanwezig tijdens diens spreekuur. De Oostenrijkse zenuwarts en grondlegger van de psycholoog-analyse stelde dat zeer op prijs. Zodra zijn hond begon te gapen wist hij dat de sessie voorbij was. </div><div class="" style="margin: 0px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; color: rgb(26, 26, 26); background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255); min-height: 12px;"><br class=""></div><div class="" style="margin: 0px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; color: rgb(26, 26, 26); background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);">Alle tweehonderd foto’s zijn voorzien van een bijpassend verhaal. Ook zijn er op <i class="">Depth of Field</i> losse verzamelingen te zien waarbij foto’s uit diverse tijdsvakken met hetzelfde thema bij elkaar zijn gebracht. ‘Werkende vrouwen’, ‘vallende mensen’, 'ingetekende foto’s’ en ’Stork-machines’ zijn slechts enkele van de categorieën. De serie educatieve foto’s over hoe om te gaan met atoomdreiging uit 1950 is met de oorlog in Oekraïne ineens weer actueel. Experimenten zijn onder meer te vinden in de Duitse micro-fotografie van begin twintigste eeuw: dieren en bloemen die via een speciale microscoop werden gefotografeerd.
