Shifting the analysis of digital games to local specificities that build and perform the global and general, Gaming Rhythms employs ethnographic work conducted in Venezuela and Australia to account for the material experiences of actual game players. This book explores the materiality of digital play across diverse locations and argues that the dynamic relation between the everyday life of the player and the experience of digital game play can only be understood by examining play-practices in their specific situations. Editors: Andrew Whelan, Chris Moore and Ruth Walker This book takes up the momentum provided by the recent resurgence of interest in zombie culture to explore the relevance of the zombie trope to discussions of scholarly practice itself. The zombie is an extraordinarily rich and evocative popular cultural form, and zombidity, zombification and necromancy can function as compelling elements in a conceptual repertoire for both explaining and critically ?enlivening? the debates around a broad variety of cultural and institutional phenomena evident in the contemporary university. We propose to canvas a range of critical accounts of the contemporary university as a living dead culture. We are therefore seeking interdisciplinary proposals for papers that investigate the political, cultural, organisational, and pedagogical state of the university, through applying the metaphor of zombiedom to both the form and content of professional academic work. We invite submissions from a range of scholars - notably in cultural and communication studies, but also popular culture, anthropology, sociology, film, game and literary studies, political science, philosophy and education - who would be prepared to submit chapters that examine the zombie trope and its relation to higher education from a variety of perspectives. The editors of ?Zombies in the Academy? have an agreement for publication with Intellect Press UK for 2012. The anthology will be structured in three sections around the broad general topics of: 1. corporatisation, bureaucratisation, and zombification of higher education; 2. technology, digital media and moribund content distribution infecting the university; 3. zombie literacies and living dead pedagogies. Paper proposals that would fit into these sections would include essays that might: ? investigate the current conditions of the academy under pressure from the ?zombie processes? variously described as ?audit culture? or the ?McDonaldisation? of higher education; ? explore the uncanny value of the figure of the zombie as a component in critical pedagogical accounts (zombie concepts, undead labour in Marxist theory etc.), including in such accounts as they are applied to the university itself; ? analyse the theme of zombies and the academic gaze through the narratives and mechanics of particular films, games, texts or graphic novels; ? name the attenuated conditions of work in the sector with reference to its various forms of ?zombidity?; ? evaluate the perceived decomposition of academic standards; ? discuss the zombie contagion model as an explanatory device for the circulation of content across multiple media platforms, including into and out of the classroom; ? explore pedagogical activities that use or reflect zombie content; ? critically investigate the rise of ?zombie literacies? - as an epidemic circulated by an unthinking student horde, and/or the undead ivory tower itself; ? address the corpselike inertia and atavism of academic distinction and social closure (journal rankings, peer review, tenure etc.) in the face of the apparently ?lifelike? models of research production beyond the walls of the academy; ? reassess the metaphor of zombiedom, considering how it can be construed not only as a negative critique, but also as a possibly desirable, advantageous or alternative adaptive strategy in academic contexts. Abstracts for proposed book chapters should be 1000 words. Authors are asked to include brief biographical details along with their proposals, including name, academic affiliation and previous publications. Deadline for submissions is 15th December 2010. It was really heartwarming to see so many friends pop out of the wood work. We had some of my first work from the Vanuatu Pacifica Project up, I DJ'd all nite and had fun meeting some new faces. I really appreciate Dame Dash's crew for being generous enough to host! Thanx, too, to all who've donated to the Vanuatu Pacifica Project so far! You're making real this idea of a cultural center that serves local and visiting artists with residencies and shares digital media and renewable energy technologies with people on Tanna so they can share their stories with the world. As of today you've gotten us to almost 40% of our goal of $10,000 on Kickstarter - 60% lies ahead of us but now I feel we'll get there. I'm gratified that many of you on the list support the goals of the project. That feels fantastic! You're making this a really great birthday. in peace Paul aka DJ Spooky A DJ, a Remote island, and a new digital media arts center: The Vanuatu Pacifica Initiative and the Tanna Center for the Arts. http://www.kickstarter.com MORE ABOUT THE PROJECT:www.djspooky.com/vanuatu DJ Spooky is a writer, an artist, and a digital media theoretician. He's starting a digital media and contemporary arts lab on a remote island in the South Pacific, and is setting up a kickstarter campaign to help defray the startup costs. In tandem with islandsfirst.org, a United Nations affiliated non-profit that focuses on the needs of South Pacific islands, Dj Spooky plans on setting up a situation where cultural exchange between artists from different geographies can take time to do residencies on the island and create projects with local artists and creatives in conjunction with an agenda that focuses on sustainable arts practices. The Funds ? Anything you contribute will cover the construction of an initial ?outpost? on-site, a feasibility assessment and design of the first phase solar electricity systems for one village and three new structures between now and May 2011, when our first invited artists will arrive. In December, local leadership, DJ Spooky, Engineers Without Borders and the Vanuatu Pacifica Foundation have arranged for R. David Gibbs, a New York-based solar and energy engineer with remote-location experience, to undertake a feasibility study with local renewables engineers, village electricians and tech trainees. The first goal is to replace diesel generators with solar PV and thermal systems that can power villages and initiate the design of the Tanna Center for the Arts? off-the-grid retreat, cultural preservation and eco-education facility. You've probably noticed we're starting at $10,000 here on Kickstarter but with $20,000 we can complete the solar design phase, engage local craftspeople to build the initial structure(s) and create an ?outpost? that allows us to invite collaborators from around the island and the world to begin realizing this vision. Everybody's help with a little or a lot is welcome, needed and much appreciated! . Anyone who knows about hip hop from the early 90's remembers John McCain's unwillingness to endorse creating a local version of Martin Luther King's birthday. The update here is a 21st century look in the rear view mirror. The clich? that "those who don't learn from the past are doomed to repeat it" still holds sway in our hyper amnesiac culture. I remixed D.W. Griffith's infamous film Birth of a Nation with a bit of Public Enemy in mind, and later on, they named an e.p. with the same name as my project. Me and Chuck D have done several projects in the past around progressive, non knucklehead hip hop. Please feel free to download this track and pass it around. We are the media. The ArtLab initiative is for experimentation and collaboration between artists from multiple disciplines to explore new artistic practices. It supports substantial, long-term research and development projects. The emphasis is on innovation, risk taking, artistic integrity and the creation of new ideas. ArtLab brings together artists and collaborators in new creative contexts that fuel cross-fertilisation of ideas and artforms. The main objectives of the program are to provide significant opportunities for: new collaborations between artists that explore creative risk-taking and cross-artform experimentation promoting the importance and critical role of interdisciplinary research and development in the arts. Guidelines ArtLab proposals should present research and development projects with an artistic process that demands a very high degree of risk-taking from all involved. Artists involved in ArtLab are expected to experiment with radical creative processes and be flexible to outcomes that cannot be predicted in advance. The project should span a significant period of time - from 1 to 2 years - with a detailed budget and research plan corresponding to this timeframe. The project may involve presentation of work in progress or peer feedback via some other public forum. Proposals must demonstrate significant cash or in-kind support for the ArtLab to occur. Anra writes, Asymco, an industry analysis advisory firm, has come up with some interesting findings. The advisory company collected data from iTunes and upon analyzing it found that the app download curve is much steeper than the one for music download. Although music download is seeing a constant increase in the number of downloads, app download is catching up real fast. After its debut about five years back, iTunes currently has traffic of 12 billion music downloads per month. However, App download has already touched the figure of 6 billion downloads a month in just two years of its launch. Based on the rate of growth, app downloads are likely to overtake music downloads by the end of this year. Solve the global water crisis from your laptop .. www.worldcommunitygrid.org Friday, 10 September 2010 Help solve the global water crisis by leaving your laptop alone for a few hours and letting it join the millions of other computers on the Worldwide Community Grid. This was one of the projects announced on September 7 by IBM which sponsors a global community of personal computers known as the Worldwide Community Grid Scientists can tap into the idle processing power of computers on the grid and then use it to develop water filtering technology, research treatments for water-related diseases and clean up polluted water sources. By using the processing power provided by the 1.5 million computers linked into the grid, scientists will be able to perform online environmental simulations, crunch numbers and pose hypothetical scenarios faster than before. While networks of personal computers have previously been used for projects such as searching for extraterrestrial life, this is the first time a community of personal computers tackle our global environmental problems. Scientists from the University of Virginia will use the Worldwide Community Grid to gain a better understanding of the effects of agricultural, commercial and industrial actions on Chesapeake Bay on the East Coast of the USA, and in Brazil scientists are using the grid to seek a cure to waterborne disease schistosomiasis. In China researchers from Tsinghua University in cooperation with scientists in Australia and Switzerland are also using the grid to seek ways to purify contaminated water. Computer users can become part of the global community by registering online at http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org and installing a free secure program which runs on Linux, Microsoft Windows and Mac OS, when a user's computer is idle or between keystrokes the program requests data from the Worldwide Community Grid. http://www.independent.co.uk/environment/solve-the-global-water-crisis- from-your-laptop-2075548.html (snip) -- Cheers, Stephen Message sent using MelbPC WebMail Server From stephen at melbpc.org.au Tue Sep 14 11:47:57 2010 From: stephen at melbpc.org.au (stephen at melbpc.org.au) Date: Tue, 14 Sep 2010 09:47:57 GMT Subject: ::fibreculture:: World Giving Index Message-ID: <20100914094757.BE6AB96D@eagle.melbpc.org.au> Hi all, http://www.cafonline.org/Default.aspx?page=19428 Home > Research > Publications > Research - 2010 > World Giving Index World Giving Index The "World Giving Index" is the first report of its kind looking at charitable behaviour across the world. At a time when the notion of life is once again located in an uncertain domain, a wide range of artistic initiatives come together to illustrate and investigate this phenomenon; they examine the impact on the collective conscience and the way it is manifested in cultural, technological and social thought. Over the last decade, in the same formal space, VIDA has been bringing together interdisciplinary projects that respond to this situation. By means of formal strategies that defy the boundaries between existing practices, these projects offer new ways of reflecting on what we understand by life and artificial life. As in previous years there are two categories to the competition: FINISHED PROJECTS In this category VIDA 13.0 will award prizes to artistic ALife projects developed after 2008. The sum of 40,000 Euros will be shared between the projects selected by the jury: First Prize: 18,000 Euros Second Prize: 14,000 Euros Third Prize: 8,000 Euros. BLOODBATH features five artists - Linda Dement, Nancy Mauro-Flude, Kate Richards, Francesca da Rimini and Sarah Waterson. At an all girl flat track roller derby game, sensors on the helmets of players feed data to the five artworks, generating digital elaborations of the moves and collisions on track. All girl flat track roller derby is a raucous, irreverent game that usually results in minor injuries. It runs in bouts of 30 minutes, each bout being made up of 2 minute ?jams? in which one member of each team, the ?jammer?, attempts to pass the pack and so score points. For Bloodbath, the packs also have a virtual life, from robust wireless sensors (wiimotes) installed on the heads of players, collision, speed and rotational information is sent to a server and from there, on to data driven artworks. The artists are making their artworks live on site, in real-time, and these are projected as the game is played out. Bloodbath builds on investigations into our human tendency towards, and attraction to, violence - these trajectories creating technological elaborations of our delighted riveted engagement in battle and its dynamics of attack, revenge, defence, collapse, victory, deceit and subterfuge. The artists will be working with digital manifestations of speeding flesh and programmed digital activity. These works both follow and break the rules, embodying the generative repercussions of a fracas. Jahrhunderts Message-ID: <6240F3AD9F6D4854A4095A912B522234@kanonmedtdtihm> #WB: quoting Walter Benjamin, Paris, die Hauptstadt des XIX. Jahrhunderts A new e-book and its premiere in the form of an interactive, analog-digital reading on the contemporary relevance of Walter Benjamin When: Thursday, October 7, 2010, 8 PM Where: Jewish Theater of Austria 6, Kandlgasse, A 1070 Vienna September 26, 2010, is the 70th anniversary of the death of the writer, philosopher, and seminal, media and cultural theorist Walter Benjamin. The e-book #WB: quoting Walter Benjamin, Paris, die Hauptstadt des XIX. Jahrhunderts (Paris, Capital of the Nineteenth Century), edited by Alexandra Reill and compiled by kanonmedia, commemorates the oeuvre, but also the tragic end of a pre-eminent, German-Jewish intellectual whose life, work, and creativity was cut short by the Nazis. Walter Benjamin, Paris 1937 photographer unknown, archive: DHM Berlin As in Benjamin's day, we live in an age of political and social upheaval, and an age in which technologies co-define the change that accompanies upheaval. How does the process differ today, or are we still, as Benjamin suggests, caught in the cycle of "the eternal recurrence of the same"? Between August 2009 and February 2010, about 110 co-authors participated in the collective communication process on facebook. Their approaches to contemporary development prospects of democracy in a globalized, digitized and simultaneously rocked by economic crises world are presented in the ebook #WB: quoting Walter Benjamin, Paris, the capital of the XIX. Century and in the framework of the first, interactive and analog-digital reading - always in relation to the positions of Walter Benjamin: The audience and the moderators control the selection of the readings out of the ebook and - on another meta-level - contribute with their own own thoughts in a a mixture of reading, discussion, and media performance, thus reflecting together on the interweaving relationships and opportunities for development of democracy in the context of the rapid development of information technologies, economic crisis, globalization, Marxism, Capitalism and Corporate Social Responsibilities - always in an associative analysis of Walter Benjamin's reflections and a commemoration of his life and work. Faculty of Humanities The Faculty of Humanities provides education and conducts research with a strongly international profile in a large number of disciplines in the field of language and culture. Located in the heart of Amsterdam, the Faculty maintains close ties with many cultural institutes in the capital city. There are almost 1,000 employees affiliated with the Faculty, which has about 7,500 students. New impulses are required in order to further develop education and research in the field of language and culture into committed humanities. A humanities perspective provides the insight necessary to both understand and steer all sorts of social developments, for example relating to information and communication technology. Therefore, the Faculty of Humanities is looking for academics who can serve as the new generation of lecturers. Candidates are expected to hold a PhD degree and to have a background in the humanities. Outstanding didactic qualities and an affinity with students are required. It is crucial that candidates are able to combine solid research with appealing teaching. Moreover, it goes without saying that they should also be familiar with the latest developments in their field. Furthermore, the new UvA academics will contribute to the Faculty's envisioned expansion and modernisation by bridging the gap between the various disciplines. Consequently, all lecturers must be capable of teaching courses for more then one specific study programme. The Faculty of Humanities offers you the opportunity to collaborate with leading researchers at research institutes that - partly as a result of their multidisciplinary approach - are world-renowned. Moreover, you will be teaching in a dynamic context in which new educational methods are being developed. Together with the other new lecturers you will participate in a comprehensive introductory programme. You will be supervised closely during the first year of your appointment. Additional didactical training is also part of the appointment. Based on the candidate's educational portfolio, previously acquired competences will be taken into consideration. The introductory programme includes earning the 'basic training qualification'.
