Please alert potential PhD students applicants to the following opportunity:

In 2017, UNSW is launching a new PhD scholarship scheme - Sciential Scholarships. The scheme pays $40,000 tax fee per year for 4 years and up to $10,000 per year for support (travel, conferences etc).

You need to apply for a specific topic area and work with a particular supervisor. You cannot propose your own topic. Here is the topic that I (Anna Munster) will be supervising:

‘The impact of statistical forms and processes on visual culture and art’

The program for study involves:
"The project is interdisciplinary and suits candidates with a background from at least two of these fields: science and technology studies, design, and statistics. It involves building a data set using a data analytical method to track citations of visualization forms, software and image atlases used in training datasets, grey literature and statistical journals. Analyse the data set and the movement of statistical visual forms across specific domains eg from statistics to genomics to artistic visualisation. Create data visualisations of these movements of visual forms from the sciences to the humanities and arts from 1930s to the present.’
If you think you fit this description or know someone who does, please contact Anna Munster on: a.munster at unsw.edu.au<mailto:a.munster at unsw.edu.au> by Nov 11 at the latest.

We are looking for candidates who have already developed some research practices and outputs such as a few high quality conference presentations, journal articles etc and/or may have had experience as interns or worked in critical digital humanities environments (data visualisation, for example); worked a s research assistant on an academic project etc. This would be in addition to excellent undergraduate or Masters by Research qualifications. This is not a scheme that would suit a student straight out of an honours degree (unless they were exceptional researchers and had already achieved some of the above).

There is full information about the scheme here:

Study needs to be conducted in Sydney, Australia. For any intending international students, please also be aware that international student fees will be waived for the successful applicant
