You are cordially invited to attend the workshop

Consuming Chinese Cinemas in the 21st Century

23rd January 2013 at the University of Amsterdam Library (Singel 425,
Amsterdam, The Netherlands) (9.30-17.00)

and

24th January at De Doelen, 4th Floor (Kruisstraat 2, Rotterdam, The
Netherlands) (15.00-17.00).

Organised by the University of Exeter with the Amsterdam Centre for
Globalisation Studies and the International Film Festival Rotterdam.

Funded by the Leverhulme Trust's International Networks scheme, the project
"Chinese Cinemas in the 21st Century: Production, Consumption, Imagination"
aims to promote new ways of thinking about the study of Chinese cinemas by
bringing together established scholars into a dynamic network that crosses
disciplinary boundaries. The network is led by Dr. Song Hwee Lim from Exeter
University.

Following the success of the launch conference in Exeter in July 2012, the
events in the Netherlands bring the network partners and other interested
parties together to examine the ways in which Chinese films are consumed.

The event begins with a full-day workshop at the University of Amsterdam to
explore questions about and methodologies for researching film consumption,
particularly the role of film festivals.

Keynotes are from Professor Julian Stringer (University of Nottingham) and
Professor Patricia Pisters (University of Amsterdam).

Other speakers are Ruby Cheung, Tarja Laine, Kien Ket Lim, Skadi Loist,
Elena Pollacchi, Alexandra Schneider, and Cindy Wong.

Participants then relocate to the International Film Festival Rotterdam and
convene with film festival programmers (Gerwin Tamsma from IFFR and Paolo
Bertolin from Venice IFF) and film directors (tba) to discuss how certain
Chinese films are distributed, exhibited, received, and consumed in
different contexts and locales.

Please contact Penn Ip at t.t.ip at uva.nl by 18 January if you wish to attend
to one day or on both days, or if you have any further questions. There is
no registration fee.
