Dear Jean-Michel Frodon,

With your enormous support, we have been able to fight against the city
government to protect the festival’s independence and autonomy. On May 9th,
we finally could take a first step to solve this catastrophe. During the
tedious and complicated discussion with the city government, we found a way
to appoint the new festival chairman from the private sector and abolish
the ex officio of the city mayor as the festival chairman. The city mayor
SUH Byung-soo will step down and the honorary festival director KIM Dong-ho
will be the new festival chairman. Within this month, the special assembly
meeting will be called to amend the current article of association for Mr.
Kim’s appointment as a new chairman. Mr. KIM Dong-ho is one the founders of
Busan International Film Festival and served as the festival director from
its inception in 1996 to 2009. He is one of the most respected figures in
Korean film society and has a solid faith in freedom of expression and
festival independence.

There are some more articles of association left to be fixed for the
complete independence, and we will do our best to get it done after we put
the festival back on track this year. We would like to thank you from the
bottom of our hearts for your help and ask you for your continuous support
for Busan International Film Festival. Once again thank you very much.
