Wednesday at the New Horizons
“Never having seen a Satyajit Ray film is like never having seen the sun or the moon” – Akira Kurosawa. On festival Wednesday, we urge you to listen to the words of the maestro of Japanese cinema and direct your attention to the maestro of Bengali cinema – Satyajit Ray. The retrospective of his work includes 12 films, and today you’ll have a chance to see Distant Thunder (13:00), The Home and the World (15:45) and The Stranger (22:00). Today also features 9 meetings with 20 filmmakers – including a Q&A session after the world premiere of Lipstick on the Glass by Kuba Czekaj, a SexedPL debate and guided tours of exhibitions. The evening is best transformed into Thursday morning at the Festival Backyard.
As Sebastian Smoliński noted in his curatorial text: “Satyajit Ray drew inspiration from Bengal, multilingual India and the West to build his own model of cinema: eminently auteurist, deeply embedded in the local culture and marked by an ambition to create a cinematic style to suit his homeland, independent since 1947. However, Ray’s works traveled the world from the very beginning, gaining popularity in the US, Europe and at prestigious festivals. The director’s unmistakable touch has ensured that his sensual and reflective cinema has been in the global canon for decades – not so much as a solitary Bengali island, but as a collection of images and stories that dialogue with the work of other masters of cinema.” SpoilerMaster is the media partner of the retrospective.

Lost Lost Lost – cinema from the outskirts
Experimental slow cinema, hybrid documentaries, convention-breaking features and film essays. On Wednesday, we also recommend checking out the program of the Lost Lost Lost section, which features the overlooked discoveries of the past few years; films by directors whose work is situated on the fringes of cinema. Today you can still see: Ubi Sunt I + Unrest (13:15), Sleep Has Her House (16:15) and Light in the Tropics (19:15). Pełna Sala is the section’s media partner.
