167,538 attendees at the 24th mBank New Horizons IFF: an 18% increase in attendance
This year’s New Horizons was guided by the theme of wanderlust: although during the festival we encouraged people to go off the beaten path and follow roads less traveled through cinema, as many as 167,538 participants went through all the New Horizons routes this year. This is an excellent turnout: in terms of cinema events, better than in the excellent 2019 and up 18% higher than last year. We deeply appreciate your enthusiastic participation and the trust you’ve placed in the festival team!
The 24th edition of the mBank New Horizons IFF featured a program of 285 films. The on-site portion of the festival (July 18-28) offered over 600 screenings, an expanded Art Scene (including the Kroki / STEPS and Proof of Concept exhibitions, along with the Ambient Room), a VR Stage, the Amadeus Live event at the Centennial Hall, and an array of live music at the Arsenal Festival Club. Additionally, nearly 100 titles were available during the online segment of the festival (July 18 – August 4).
Attendance breakdown
167,538 is the total attendance, which includes all cinema events, including screenings at the New Horizons Cinema, the Lower Silesian Film Center, the Cinema at the Market Square, and the Amadeus Live concert, as well as music events at the Arsenal Festival Club, Art Scene exhibitions, and participation in the festival’s online offerings.
122,940: that's attendance from film events alone (screenings at KNH, DCF, Cinema at the Market Square and Amadeus Live). When factoring in other on-site events, such as concerts at the Arsenal and the Art Scene, total attendance rises to 138,643. This figure rivals the excellent turnout of 2019, a year without an online component but featuring an expanded Art Scene and music events at the Arsenal. In terms of overall attendance, 2024 has proven to be an even stronger year.
July 20: a record-breaking day
12,441: that’s the attendance at on-site events on July 20, the first Saturday of the New Horizons. This was not only the most popular day of this year’s festival but also surpassed the record day of 2019 by 638 attendees.
Online Festival
The online segment of New Horizons concluded on August 4, showcasing nearly 100 festival titles. These films were played 16,998 times, but considering that more than one person likely watched each screening at home, the actual viewership is much higher. Using a multiplier of 1.7, commonly applied by global festivals to estimate online attendance, the total virtual audience for this year’s New Horizons would be 28,895.
New Horizons in a nutshell: aftermovie from the festival
We could write a whole essay with bows and thanks for this wonderful edition, but after all, we are a film festival, so now let's let the moving images do the talking. Here’s the aftermovie: a nutshell summary of this year’s New Horizons. The material was prepared by the Wizja collective.
