Kinds of Kindness: what a beautiful madness!
Three novellas, eight outstanding actors, and an idea that germinated in the minds of two geniuses — Yorgos Lanthimos and co-writer Efthymis Filippou. Kinds of Kindness is a frenetic, energetic study of human relationships, cooked up with Lanthimos’ signature sharp irony and seasoned with vibrant absurdity that breaks the monotony of everyday life. The Greek director has once again assembled an impressive star-studded cast, including Emma Stone, Jesse Plemons, Margaret Qualley, Willem Dafoe, Hong Chau, Mamoudou Athie, Hunter Schafer, and Joe Alwyn. Kinds of Kindness had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, where it was highly praised, and Jesse Plemons received the award for best actor.
Europe in Hollywood: the masterful cinema of Lanthimos
Yorgos Lanthimos is sweeping through cinematic salons like a storm. His career resembles a Hitchcock script: he began with an earthquake, and the tension has only grown since. The springboard to his international career was the daring Dogtooth (Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Language Film). Then came the superbly received Alps (screenplay award at the Venice IFF), The Lobster (Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay), and The Killing of a Sacred Deer (screenplay award at Cannes). His status as a maestro was cemented by The Favourite (nine Oscar nominations and a win for Olivia Colman). Earlier this year, Lanthimos broke the bank with Poor Things, which won four Oscars (including one for Emma Stone’s phenomenal performance), garnered rave reviews, and, above all, captured the hearts of audiences. Despite firmly establishing himself in Hollywood, Lanthimos has not forgotten his European arthouse roots. His films seamlessly blend the best elements of both worlds, bearing his distinctive, unmistakable stamp.
The 24th mBank New Horizons IFF in Wroclaw will run from July 18-28, with the online portion extending until August 4. The full program of the festival will be announced on July 2. Ticket sales for screenings will begin on July 4, while the sale of passes, as well as media and industry accreditations, continues until June 18.
