Dear colleagues,
We are delighted to announce the Spring 2025 edition of NECSUS is now available online, with special attention for film festival research!
You can access it here<https://necsus-ejms.org/portfolio/spring-2025/>.
This edition includes a special dossier, edited by Kevin B. Lee, featuring video essay as a form of festival scholarship. It presents findings and reflections from the Cinema Futures Conference at Locarno 2024. Additionally, the festival reviews in the Spring 2025 issue are thematically aligned with the dossier’s focus on survival. The founders of the Melbourne Women in Film Festival share insights on the difficulties of maintaining and growing their event with a volunteer workforce and inconsistent funding. Ezra Winton uses the tumultuous events at Hot Docs 2024 as opportunity to critique the festival’s survival strategies and advocate for alternative approaches.
With the Spring 2025 issue out, the festival review section is open for new submissions for the Autumn 2025. We welcome contributions from researchers at all stages of their careers, including graduate students. Please contact the section editors - Diane Burgess, Antoine Damiens and/or Marijke de Valck - with your ideas at your earliest convenience.
Best wishes,
Marijke
