<td><font size="2" color="#000000" style="font-size: 12px; line-height: 16px; "><p>Hurray! This summer Movies that Matter again supports film events and festivals. Out of the 115 applications we got, we selected 10 projects to receive a grant. Six of these are quite new, and the organisers will get a start-up grant. The other four will receive impact grants to further develop their festivals.</p>
<p>We believe in the power of film to open eyes to human rights, especially in countries where there is little or no press freedom. Therefore we support organisers of human rights film festivals and mobile cinema projects with financial aid, advice and training.</p></font>

<td><font size="2" color="#000000" style="font-size: 12px; line-height: 18px; "><p>Start-up grants are available for a 1st or 2nd edition of a film event, up to a total amount of € 7,500. One of the festivals that will receive a start-up grant is the Karama Yemen Human Rights Film Festival. For the first time ever a human rights film festival will take place in Yemen, in the capital city of Sana’a.</p>
<p>The other five projects we selected are:</p>
<ul>
<li>the Malawi Film Festival, putting child labour and LGBT rights in the limelight;</li>
<li>the Sama-Bhav Travelling Film Festival, focusing on gender relations in India;</li>
<li>MobiKino, a mobile cinema event in Serbia, Kosovo and Macedonia;</li>
<li>FICMA Venezuela, sensitizing people about environmental and human rights issues;</li>
<li>and one festival that will remain anonymous for safety reasons.</li>

<td><font size="2" color="#000000" style="font-size: 12px; line-height: 18px; "><p><span>This year four festivals will receive an impact grant of €</span> 10,000 each. One of them is Bajo Nuestra Piel. This festival will touch upon Bolivia’s most pressing and topical human rights issues, like access to health care and the rights of indigenous people. Screenings will take place in La Paz, El Alto, Tarija and Coroico.</p>
<p>The other festivals selected for an impact grant are:</p>
<ul>
<li>International Human Rights Film Festival, Colombia, travelling to large cities as well as several remote areas;</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>Free Zone Belgrade Film Festival, Serbia, specifically targeting youth and strengthening post-screening discussions;</li>
<li>Freedom FilmFest, Malaysia, which is further developing its education programme this year.</li>

<font size="2" color="#000000" style="font-size: 12px; line-height: 16px; "><p><span>Last month we organised the first edition of <a href="http://www.moviesthatmatter.nl/english_index/international/workshops/" target="_blank" data-system-id="27283.3947.0">Cinema without Borders</a> in Latin America. It took place in Buenos Aires in cooperation with the International Environmental Film Festival FINCA. From 30 May - 6 June fifteen participants from Latin America attended workshops on various aspects of organising a human rights film festival. There were sessions on programming, fundraising and production. Participants shared many ideas and experiences. Afterwards one of the participants stated: </span><em>“My expectations have been surpassed and it has been an extremely enriching and inspiring experience”.</em></p>
<p>We wish the participants all the best in their efforts to organise human rights film festivals in Mexico, Panama, Peru, Bolivia, Colombia, Paraguay, Costa Rica, Argentina and Chile. Muchos éxitos!</p>

Due to limited funding, we are not able to offer more grants in 2018. Fortunately, our solid partnerships with the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Oak Foundation and Amnesty International enable us to have a next selection round next year. The deadline will probably be mid-April 2019. </span></p></font>
