From Afghanistan and Azerbaijan to Sweden and the UK, these developments were promising! Yet progress is slow; the uncomfortable truth is that for many women equal rights never became more than a pipe dream. International Women’s Day - 8 March - offers a good opportunity to put (the rights of) women in the spotlight. From 22-30 March the <a href="http://www.moviesthatmatter.nl/english_index/festival" target="_blank" data-system-id="28470.3923.0">Movies that Matter Festival</a> also presents some beautiful films about powerful, courageous and resilient women.</p>

The documentary <a href="http://www.moviesthatmatter.nl/english_index/festival/programma_en/filmprogramma_en/film_en/2540/facing-the-dragon" target="_blank"><strong>Facing the Dragon </strong></a>follows two women, a journalist and a member of parliament, who refuse to be silenced in male-dominated Afghanistan. We are also proud to present the beautiful fiction film <strong><a href="http://www.moviesthatmatter.nl/english_index/festival/programma_en/filmprogramma_en/film_en/2569/dirty-god" target="_blank" data-system-id="28471.448.0">Dirty God</a></strong>, a portrait of a woman with incredible resilience after an acid attack ruined her body.</p>

The films provide impressive insights into the life and work of human rights defenders worldwide as well as the increasingly harsh conditions and threats they face. Films in the programme include <a href="http://www.moviesthatmatter.nl/english_index/festival/programma_en/filmprogramma_en/film_en/2538/esta-todo-bien" target="_blank" data-system-id="28477.448.0">Está todo bien</a>, a distressing documentary about the healthcare crisis in Venezuela; <a href="http://www.moviesthatmatter.nl/english_index/festival/programma_en/filmprogramma_en/film_en/2539" target="_blank" data-system-id="28477.448.2539">Everything Must Fall</a><em>, </em>a vivid reconstruction of the student protests in Johannesburg; and <a href="http://www.moviesthatmatter.nl/english_index/festival/programma_en/filmprogramma_en/film_en/2542" target="_blank" data-system-id="28477.448.2542">Grit</a>, about Indonesian activist Dian Maharani, who fights for justice and compensation after gas drilling operations destroyed her village. We are delighted that <a href="http://www.moviesthatmatter.nl/english_index/festival/awards__competitions/activist/activist19" target="_blank" data-system-id="28477.28436.0">activists</a> featured in all films and nearly all directors will attend our festival!</p></font>

This largest annual documentary film festival in Hungary will celebrate its 16th edition. Verzió aims to<strong> </strong>engage the broader public in the discussion on human rights, and supports critical thinking and media literacy through various education activities. The bilingual festival, which always takes place in November, contributes to the documentary film industry by organizing workshops and master classes led by world-renowned professionals. Their <a href="http://www.verzio.org/node/2198" target="_blank">Call for Submissions </a>is now open. The deadline for International Competition is 31 May 2019.</p></font>
