Where would we be without them? In these times of polarisation and declining democracy, it's more vital than ever to screen films about human rights. Festivals serve as great places to meet and discuss the topics of these films.</p>
<p>In this newsletter we're happy to share newly supported film events and our call for film submissions for the Movies that Matter Festival 2020. And, finally, we can announce our new artistic director!</p></font>

Is it about human rights, social justice or sustainability? Please submit your film to the Movies that Matter Festival! The festival, which presents seven awards, takes place from 20-28 March 2020 in The Hague.</p>
<p>Documentaries and feature films with a length of at least 52 minutes finished in 2019 or 2020 can be submitted. The deadline is <strong>1 December 2019</strong>. In <strong>Pakistan</strong> the second edition of the Chalta Phirta Documentary Festival takes place, while in <strong>Malawi</strong> the second edition of the Malawi Film Festival will be organised. Meanwhile, in <strong>Turkey</strong>, films from the Sustainable Living Film Days will now be screened outside of the big cities.</p>

She previously worked as Head of Documentaries at Dutch broadcasting association EO. Together with managing director Ali Remmelts, Margje de Koning will be responsible for the annual Movies that Matter Festival and for our different programmes (On Tour, Events, Education and International Support). <br><br>De Koning: "At the present juncture, in which human rights, freedom of expression and the environment are at the top of the political and social agenda, I hope to make a significant contribution to the dialogue about these topics".</p></font>

In September the <a href="https://www.humanrightsfilmnetwork.org/filmfestival/international-human-rights-film-festival-albania" target="_blank">International Human Rights Film Festival Albania</a> kicks off and if you happen to be in Malaysia, make sure to visit the <a href="https://www.humanrightsfilmnetwork.org/filmfestival/freedom-film-festival" target="_blank">Freedom Film Festival</a>. So, go out, watch some films and join the discussion!</p>
