Message-ID: <3748079acecc9e35adcf1683cfd7bf0e@xs4all.nl> There has been discussion in justice departments to give some of the money of fines and settlements back to the victims. Could this also be applied to criminal business practices? And on a scale as well, could damage to the entire Earth also be handled at the international level instead of countries? If we consider the precedent of Volkswagen (and other automakers), that a large part of the settlements would go to the ISA? Volkswagen agrees to a $14.7 billion settlement in the United States https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2017/business/volkswagen-diesel-emissions-timeline.html Imagine what could be done with just a fraction of this.. And if that could work, maybe the upcoming FB fine as well? German court rules Facebook use of personal data illegal https://www.reuters.com/article/us-germany-facebook/german-court-rules-facebook-use-of-personal-data-illegal-idUSKBN1FW1FI?il=0 It is not about taking position at the backside of the problem, because once justice has ruled, the problem should be prevented by the law. Christian Fuchs will be giving an introduction to ?Digital Demagogue?, a timely and topical study of the expressions of ideology, nationalism and authoritarianism in the age of big data, Trump and social media. We are all familiar with the ways that Donald Trump uses digital media to communicate, from the ridiculous to the terrifying. This book digs deeper into the use of those tools in politics to show how they have facilitated the rise of authoritarianism, nationalism, and right-wing ideologies around the world. I felt a bit weird sharing my concerns about social networks (Facebook, Twitter) on another social network (Reddit). It's true that mailing lists are also social networks themselves, but here we are not being sold to anyone. Cheers, JMM. This is where I first became exposed on the idea of "attention as a resource exploited by third parties". This brought me to the "right to attention" [1] and another treatment of the same topic with a different angle, "The World beyond your head" [2]. I'd be grateful if someone could provide more readings related to this topic. Thanks a million, JMM.
