Hi all,
this morning, the Dutch newspaper NRC Next featured an article about
dancing & YouTube, and how dance trends often spread through online
video.
"Bizarre dansjes verspreiden zich het snelst via internet" , by
Marten Mantel (NRC Next 19-05-2008, p 30).
I've made a short summary of the new online dance trends (according
to NRC Next) and included some links.
Ciao, Sabine
Soulja Boy Dance
Soulja boy is a 16 year old amateur rapper from the US, who published
his sng Crank Dat online in April 2007. His moves caused a stream of
video responses with parodies, imitations and mash-ups (including one
with Pooh dancing the Soulja Boy) and the boy had scored a number one
hit.

Tecktonik
Frensh electrosinger Yelle became famous because of her music video A
Cause des Garçons (Tepr Remix), which featured a new dance stye from
the banlieus in Paris called Tecktonik.

Salmon Dance
The Chemical Brother launched the Salmon Dance last year, not by
dancing it, but by giving instructions in the Salmon Dance Song: „Put
your hands to the side, as silly as it seems, and shake your body
like a salmon floating up stream”. They invited people to upload
their versions of the Salmon Dance to YouTube, but of course loads of
fans had already done that.

Tabarnak
'Le Tabarnak' is a dance from the rap band Les200 from the French
Canadian hiphop scene in Montreal. It supposedly is danced in clubs
in Canada. The dance is simple: just keep one of your feet off the
floor for the full duration of the song and don't forget to dance.

Rolex Sweep
The most recent example of a 'song that comes with new moves' has
been spotted in the London crime scene. Rappers/producers Wiley and
Skepta have thought up the Rolex Sweep, as moves to Wiley’s new
single 'Wearing My Rolex'.
It goes something like this: pretend to fill a glass with champagne,
and then wave your arm around so everybody can see your Rolex. Wiley
and Skepta have recorded an instruction video (more like a rap song
with slide show), in which they explain the moves and rap: „Soulja
Boy can’t dance like me, Michael Jackson can’t dance like me”.
