[WebCultures] PhD position at C2DH, University of Luxembourg

The HIVI project (“A history of online virality”), funded by the FNR and hosted at the Luxembourg Centre for Contemporary and Digital History (C²DH, University of Luxembourg) is looking for a PhD student who will work under the direct supervision of Prof. Dr Valérie Schafer.

Her/his PhD research will shed light on a rather unknown history, that of digitalisation in Luxembourg. The work of contextualising the emergence of the first ISPs and websites (developed by the government, museums, individuals, etc.), analysing the pace of development of online social media, drawing on the Web archives collected by the BnL for example, and carrying out a series of oral interviews is at the core of this research dedicated to the history of the country’s digitalisation and more broadly its technical, social and cultural history.

The doctoral researcher will work in close connection with the HIVI team. (S)he will also help coordinate international events, conferences, and workshops.

- Prepare and write a doctoral thesis on “Digital cultures and their development in Luxembourg (late 1990s to the present day)”

- Participate in the FLSHASE Doctoral School and the skills trainings of the Doctoral Training Unit on “Digital History and Hermeneutics”

- Engage in and contribute to the dynamics of the HIVI research team

- Disseminate results through scientific publications

Profile

- Master’s degree or diploma (Master equivalent) in history or related field, preferably with a specialisation in contemporary history or/and in history of technology and a strong interest for the history of the Web

- Good digital literacy and skills in digital history

- Ability to participate to a collective research project

- Language skills: excellent working knowledge of French and English (Luxembourgish and German would be a strong asset too)
