Call for Applicants at the *School of Machines, Making and Make-Believe*!

We are an independent school in Berlin hovering at the intersections of *art,
technology, design & human connection*. We are trying to be more responsive
to the* digital, cultural social and political climate and design *courses
that we think are needed in the world.

We just launched our new website and we are also excited to share our
new *intensive
summer programs for 2019*!

Please share with your communities or anyone who might benefit from
these *four-week
programs*. Two of them are very special one week intensive classes--Money
and Evidence-- two *super relevant topics* that are current and somewhat
urgent and which we feel must be spoken about!

03 - 28 June :: Data and Society <http://schoolofma.org/data-and-society/>*
Berlin, Germany* (already started)

This program will introduce people to data in all forms, ranging from urban
infrastructure to Open Data portals to your online footprint to scientific
observations. Students will engage with data first as a concept then learn
fabrication techniques, including laser-cutting and 3D printing, to make
this data jump off the screen and into reality. The program will conclude
with students designing final projects for a public showcase where they
each present a physical data-visualization object, sculpture, installation
or experience around a social issue that resonates with them.

*01 - 26 July :: Physical Computing for Beginners

This program will focus on physical computing and interactivity, exploring
the creative intersection of emerging technologies, and how they can work
seamlessly together to create unique prototypes, products and experiences.
Students will take a hands-on approach to working with basic electronic
components, sensors and motors, using the Arduino platform as a base to
play and to create magical things that bring ideas to life through
interactivity. The final week of the program students discuss education and
career opportunities in the field of physical computing while finalizing
their narrative and interactive experiences for a public exhibition.

*01 - 26 July :: Bots & ML Berlin <http://bit.ly/2019Program_Bots>, Germany*

The goal of this program is to learn and understand common machine learning
techniques and apply them to generate creative outputs in the browser.
Students will be introduced to libraries like TensorFlow.js, ml5.js, p5.js
for creating web-based ML projects and Runway ML, Style transfer, Pix2pix
and other up-to-date ML practices possible in the browser (no prior
experience required). In the final week, combining what we’ve learned,
students will continue developing projects as well as collaborate together
to integrate their ideas into a group project, for a final public
exhibition.

*05 - 30 August :: Coding for Beginners <http://bit.ly/2019Program_Coding>
Berlin, Germany*

How can we expand our visions of the world around us and ourselves in new
ways by learning to code? This program will begin with a discussion of
concepts, narratives, play, and critical discourse as an introduction to
coding before moving on to the command line and advanced coding techniques.
By learning how to create create interactivity through code, student will
develop projects and present them in a final showcase.

05 - 9 August :: Money <http://bit.ly/2019Program_Money>* Berlin,
Germany *(Special
Format)

This program is about money! Whether we have it or not, money rules the
world, or so it seems. In recent years, technologies like cryptocurrency,
bitcoin, and blockchain have come to the fore offering alternatives to the
current system but we need to know more. In this program, students will
gain an understanding of the general history of money and economies, the
current state of worldwide financial systems, practical knowledge of money
laundering, tax evasion, debt, and the inner workings of blockchain and
cryptocurrencies. The class will include playful yet earnest experiments in
financial co-creation: we will work on concepts and prototypes for basic
income, token systems, and community currencies, and finally the program
will conclude with a collaborative booksprint.

16 - 21 September :: Evidence <http://bit.ly/2019Program_Evidence>* Berlin,
Germany* (Special Format)

This program delves into the topic of citizen forensics. We’ll take a
deeper look into projects that have stemmed from a new movement of citizens
taking action in the name of justice and human rights. From Forensic
Architecture to VFRAME and Tactical Technology Collective, we’ll learn how
to gather information, problem-solve with the latest tools, and use
critical techniques for safely navigating and investigating the world as a
means of bearing witness.

*30 September - 25 October :: Waiting & Escaping
<http://schoolofma.org/waiting-and-escaping/> Berlin, Germany*

This course is fundamentally about designing immersive experiences. What
considerations are there when designing for full immersion? When time is of
the essence, where do we focus our attention to ensure that the show goes
on? What kinds of talents and skills are necessary for such an undertaking?
Student will earn the finer points of escape room design and take on the
ambitious task of designing one ourselves that will be open to the public
as part of the final showcase of the program. This is a very special
program made up of brilliant guest speakers, each specialized in very niche
and fantastical fields.
