What's On?

In the face of adversity and continued repression from the authorities over the past year, Side by Side LGBT Film Festival pulls through and returns once again, for the sixth year running, to Saint Petersburg, Russia putting on a full programme of screenings and discussions dedicated to LGBT issues and rights between 21 – 30 November, 2013. On the offering this year are over 30 films including award-winning work from Cannes, Berlin and Venice Film Festivals.

The task of deliberating over the films this year and deciding who the worthy winners should be of the BOBIK Award, 2013 is the responsibility of individuals from the sphere of arts and culture, journalism and the film festival industry.

** Matterhorn Opens Side by Side

Opening the film festival is Matterhorn (http://bok-o-bok.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=dbede688c5271e8af4ffaca00&id=c7ee2becb2&e=e8b8704305) , by Dutch director Diederik Ebbinge, The film won the critics acclaim at the 35th Moscow International Film Festival and collected many unofficial prizes  including the Audience Award as well as the Main Prize of Guild of Film Critics. After the screening, there will be a discussion with the Director of Photography Dennis Wielaert. This year also sees the premier of Xavier Dolan’s Tom at the Farm (Canda / France), Keep the Lights On (USA) by Ira Sachs and from Polish director In the Name of.. by Malgoska Szumowska.

Valentine Road (http://bok-o-bok.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=dbede688c5271e8af4ffaca00&id=4d266c7dd7&e=e8b8704305) confronts issues of racism, transphobia, class and the juvenile justice system. Told through the lens of students, teachers, family members and legal officials involved in the case of the murder of Larry King, it is a heartbreaking journey with no victors. After the screening of the film a panel of experts, including Elena Klimova (http://bok-o-bok.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=dbede688c5271e8af4ffaca00&id=c7562ada47&e=e8b8704305) , journalist and creator of the project “Children-404”, will address the issue of LGBT youth in Russia and their right to access information concerning homosexuality.

Breaking new ground in contemporary American gay cinema, Ira Sachs’ deeply personal drama Keep the Lights On examines a volatile 10-year relationship between two divergently addictive personalities, observed in a style that is loose and impressionistic while at the same time microscopic in its intimate detail.

This psychological thriller from Canada's endlessly inventive and provocative Xavier Dolan follows a grief-stricken young ad copywriter who visits his dead lover’s parents — only to get drawn into a savage game rooted in the rural family’s dark past. The film was not only a hit among the audiences in Venice but also at the Tomorrow Film Festival in Moscow where demand was so great that additional screenings had to be organized!
