Friday at the New Horizons
The center of Wroclaw is bustling with festival life, but today we direct your attention to the peripheries – to the world, people and phenomena that rarely find their representation on screen. Our guide to the outskirts will be Alice Diop, the heroine of one of this year’s retrospectives. There will also be opportunities today to attend 13 meetings with 21 filmmakers (including Portuguese maestro Paulo Abreu), go on a cruise with Buster Keaton in The Navigator (NFM Organ Cinema), be swept away by the music of Rosalie., soak up the art at exhibitions, and officially kick off the weekend at the Festival Backyard.
Last September, Alice Diop left the Venice International Film Festival with two awards, and her feature debut, Saint Omer, was selected as the French candidate for an Oscar. However, Diop’s talent did not manifest itself suddenly – she has consistently built her career as a documentary filmmaker over the last several years. In her films, she portrays the lives of immigrants, refugees, and suburban residents; introducing black bodies, black voices, and the perspective of the periphery into French cinema. Her work proves that the margins are not only a product of the center, but also slowly and inevitably change and reshape it. Today, you can watch Diop’s Saint Omer (9:45) and Danton's Death (16:00).

Cinema? Art? Visual Front!
Those looking for an area where cinema and art intermingle are recommended to explore the Visual Front, one of the most important sections of the mBank New Horizons Festival for years. It is a space for experimentation, where artists work with film form, and filmmakers explore conceptual narratives. The Visual Front is saturated with dreams, revolutionary energy, and unfettered imagination.
