Dear new students of the Research MA Media Studies,

Welcome to Amsterdam. My name is Jaap Kooijman and, together with Thomas Poell, I coordinate the first core course "Classic Texts in Media Theory." Coming Monday, Thomas and I will explain the course to you and give you all the details about the literature and assignments. In the meantime, we would like to ask you the following:

*	Think about what you consider a "classic text" in your studies so far. In other words, which text has been "essential" of extremely "influential" in the way you perceive Media Studies or a related field? Feel free to pick any text that you think is most appropriate; don't pick a text just because you think WE might consider it a classic text. If you have a hardcopy of the text, please bring it to class.
*	Be prepared to say a few words about the text. You don't have to prepare a full presentation, but we will use the texts to learn more about each other academically.
*	Please send the author and title of the text by e-mail to Jaap Kooijman a.s.a.p., just so we know what texts we can expect.

Looking forward to meeting you all,

Jaap Kooijman

	BIOGRAPHIES

	Sin Sin Collective
Dubbed 'digital terrorists' by The Irish Times, sin sin is an
international group of pan media artists working under the auspices of
their beloved leader, The Fat Controller. Sin Sin Collective makes
performances, music and art animations using new technology in
	combination with classical techniques. See
	http://sinsincollective.com <http://sinsincollective.com/> .

	The RaaskalBOMfukkerZ
Notorious rogue with pockets full of surprises in the form of
intricate noise / soundscape of hip-hop with eggs and poisonous
complex versification (from Russian bio). More on:
	http://www.myspace.com/raaskalbomfukkerz

EINDBAAS DJ team (Klazien Schaap & Frans Twisk)
EINDBAAS is the bad guy at the end of every computergame. We all know
him, he comes in shapes and sizes, he's invincible and always there.
EINDBAAS! It's also the name of the super super super happy and
happening chiptune parties in Utrecht, hosted by dj PCK and Kla. They
love you getting your kicks playing their upbeat chiptunes, micro
dubstep, and other 8-bit dance delights. www.micromusic.nl <http://www.micromusic.nl/>

	VJ Rosa Menkman
Every technology possess its own inherent accidents. Rosa Menkman is a
Dutch visualist who focuses on visual artifacts created by accidents
in digital media. The visuals she makes are the result of glitches,
compressions, feedback and other forms of noise. Although many people
perceive these accidents as negative experiences, Rosa emphasizes
	their positive consequences. http://rosa-menkman.blogspot.com/ and
	http://www.youtube.com/rosamenkman

	VJ Minke Kampman (VIADUKTAPE)
VIADUKTAPE does it low-tech, analogue, crispy, trashy with lots of vodka.
One does the live VJ input that the other brings to the screen in a
wild performance. It's like an electronique etch-a-sketch that keeps
	on sketching. http://viaduktape.com/
