Dear List members,

I am writing to let you know about the initiative 'A Season of Classic Films', which offers free access to European archival films, connecting the public with cinema history and the preservation of film heritage. This is an initiative of the Association des Cinémathèques Européennes (ACE), an affiliation of 49 European national and regional film archives. ACE is a regional branch of FIAF (Fédération Internationale des Archives du Film/ International Federation of Film Archives).

Twenty-two European film institutions are taking part this year offering free access to films from their precious collections. The programme features a variety of European films, produced from 1896 to 1992. Several institutions plan free worldwide streaming events to enable greater access.

Specifically aiming to younger audiences, the initiative offers several new digital restorations, classical to experimental electronic music accompaniments for silent films, and live or recorded discussions contextualising the film screenings. All online events are available for free in English.

Current and upcoming free screening events:
Digitised from the vaults of the IFI Irish Film Archive, the 1958 film 'She Didn't Say No!' will be free-to-view worldwide today and until 22 April, with an introduction on the film’s preservation and history. Originally banned in Ireland on moral grounds, the film is based on the true story of an unmarried mother of six children by five different men. Made in Technicolor and with a strong cast of Abbey Theatre actors.

Coming up next: Films of Jana Kříženecký [compilation] (1898-1911), premiere by the Czech National Film Archive on 22 April at 17:00 CET, followed by live Q&A discussion.

Please join our events and spread the world, especially among film students and others who may be interested.

All the best,

Coordinator of 'A Season of Classic Films'

Paulina Reizi
