Dear Reader,

Plokta is slowly awakening from hibernation, dormant all through summer and autumn. This time last year, we were moving at full steam to launch the first edition of Plokta Festival. Unfortunately, as the first lockdown hit Amsterdam, the festival had to be cancelled just weeks before opening night. So instead Plokta rechanneled its energy towards launching a makeshift TV channel: PloktaTV.

So we caught the hang of being a broadcasting station. In April 2020, PloktaTV gathered 1477 viewers worldwide around the warm glow of their laptop screens, streaming 41 filmmakers, designers and artists, and 1.113,99 GB to households worldwide. Now, a year on, it is still unsure if / how / when the festival can happen in meatspace (IRL). Yet, as 2021’s lockdown intensifies, we interrupt this pandemic to bring you an important announcement.

Plokta returns as a streaming event for those exhausted by streaming. Linear TV for a generation that already killed off linear TV. Broadcasting for a post-broadcasting world. From cathodes to pixels, channel-hopping to binge-watching, ratings to clicks – television has changed, and not only for the better. So we’re connecting a past era of network broadcasting with a future beyond this media-saturated present. The cord might have been cut on cable TV, but we’re still plugging in.

Forget personalised. Forget on demand. PloktaTV SE/02 unveils the hidden life of technology, live on television. We are an organic, global meeting of your new favourite young artists, shoebox projects, and experiments. We gather the works and ideas of the brightest minds, and beam them to you, the viewer, directly. For one week, 24 hours a day, synchronously, worldwide.

A few select films from the original festival will be shown during PloktaTV SE/02. Among them is the opening film for the festival, Core Dump, by Francois Knoetze. A visually compelling poetic exploration of the relationship between cybernetics, colonialism and utopias, Core Dump shows a global machine on the brink of collapse. We’ll also feature the amazing video lecture Skull Island III by Graham Kelly, unveiling the ideological and financial stories behind the fictional setting of the 1933 King Kong and its adaptations since.
